The Ipad plus external screen/s approach - if it's live, keep it present for highest impact.

TL:DR - Get it visible at the event, and on the biggest screens, for greatest impact.

If you are looking for live illustration aka visual scribing aka graphic recording and have access to some extra screens at your event, this is the perfect engagement tool - creative, fun, colourful, on-brand and insightful. So imagine you have hired me to illustrate live at your event. How would that go?

First of all: Congratulations! You have hired a seasoned pro with a very specialised creative skillset - a LIVE ILLUSTRATOR who does VISUAL SCRIBING aka GRAPHIC RECORDING. You have had a briefing call to discuss the agenda and a bit about the process and integration with your event. Maybe you've seen this done before; maybe you get it in theory but not practice, and would like to know more about the process. If so, please do read on.

Peter Morey Illustration set up for digital graphic recording with a dedicated side screen with a live feed.
The basic set-up with a direct LIVE feed.

One the Day, the first step will be getting the set-up and tech test done, 30-60 mins prior to kick off.

Then, some questions: Will the visuals be live all day on an external screen? If so, a dedicated side screen is recommended.

Will the images be sharing air-time with the deck? If so, agreeing times to display, and a process for displaying the images, is recommended.

File sharing: Will the artists simply send the images to your AV team for them to incorporate into the deck? (eg at break times and at lunch)

Or: Will the AV team switch between your deck and the live feed of the artist's digital canvas? If so, setting up the illustration station near to the AV team is recommended, with access to an HDMI cable that links to the AV team's set-up.

Showing the images on the main screen can have impact and good integration into your event, but space sharing with the main deck must be negotiated.

A dedicated side-screen means a continuous live feed is possible, but it's not always a focal point.

Maybe you have a MASSIVE side-screen that can be dedicated to the images, updated throughout the day? This can be a focal point...

Peter Morey Illustration - live graphic recording used as graphic facilitation during a live panel event
As with the analogue methods, live illustration can be used to facilitate discussions as well as record them - see how the live feed of visuals is almost a participant in the panel discussion, with panellists occassionally 'talking to' the images as well as to each other.

Maybe you want to try multiple screens? Side screens, big screens, screens in the foyer...

The great thing about digital visual scribing is its versatility - scale to as many screens as you want!

With digital Live Illustration - the wall's the limit!

A great use of live illustration starts with great collaboration and communication. Get all these things locked down as best as possible in the lead in and you will have a real WOW factor activity taking place at your event. This is especially true for digital approaches, because the live 'presence' and impact of the visuals depends on equipment external to the artist's individual (carryable) toolkit.

That said, you could always decide that the illustrations are only to be seen in the post-event mail-out!
